Managing Activity for Maximum Weight Loss
Most students entering Wellspring Academies have been living a sedentary lifestyle, spending lots of time in front of the television or computer screen. In order to adopt an active lifestyle, students require structure, encouragement, and a very supportive environment.
With a simple, scientific, and sustainable approach to getting active, Wellspring students lose weight, get in shape, and learn that being active can be fun and rewarding. Our staff are specially trained to work with students who are used to be sedentary, teaching them how to safely and effectively begin their journey to an active lifestyle.
At Wellspring Academies, students are exposed to simple activities that they can continue for a lifetime, such as walking, swimming, playing tennis and lifting weights. In addition, students learn how to play a variety of team sports, engage in exciting adventure activities, and learn how to safely make use of the classes and equipment available at fitness centers.
Many of our students have had negative experiences in gym class and organized sports. That all changes at Wellspring, where students are surrounded by others who understand their struggle, and staff who help and encourage them every step of the way.
Sustainable Fitness Goals
At the heart of Wellspring’s Activity Management program is our focus on simple, measurable goals that are set and monitored each day, such as taking at least 10,000 steps. Daily activity goals, which are determined by a student’s place within the Wellspring Level System, are recorded in each student’s self-monitoring journal and reviewed with Behavioral Coaches. This system allows students to see their progress, understand their activity habits, and overcome the barriers to daily activity that have kept them sedentary in the past.
Activity Schedule
All students have at least two extended periods of activity on weekdays, adding up to around 4 hours of activity. Students are encouraged to focus on activities they enjoy, and that they realistically will be able to continue after transitioning home. Weekends are scheduled with a range of on- and off-campus activities, as well as downtime for students to socialize, focus on school work, and take care of personal responsibilities such as cleaning their rooms.
Both Wellspring Academies campuses make excellent use of their natural environment, fitness facilities and surrounding recreational resources when planning activities. Therefore, activities vary at each campus. For information about types of activities at each of our programs, click on the individual program links below:

There are always activities at Wellspring to keep students moving. Whether a scheduled activity such as water aerobics in the swimming pool, a pick-up game of soccer, a trip to the cardio room with a friend to watch a favorite TV show while on the treadmill, or a canoe trip, students adopt active lifestyles that keep them moving, energized, and feeling good. Students return home with a written plan detailing their personal long-term activity goals.
