Surprise Call Home

Wednesday, December 2nd

Wow, I had a great surprise today. I have been on the road all week going here and there to conferences and trainings and I did not expect to get to talk to Colt today. He was supposed to call home and talk to his dad and brother instead of taking a chance on catching me on my unreliable cell phone. Besides, I would be seeing him this weekend so it is only fair his dad get to at least talk to him. However, to my delight, Colt did catch me on the phone somewhere around the Austin city limits.

He had great news that he couldn’t wait to share with me. He had wanted to wait until I got there Saturday to tell me, but he just couldn’t hold out until then; he was too excited. He wanted me to know that he was going to run in a holiday 5K run in Asheville on Sunday! At first he didn’t really want to because I was going to be there and he didn’t want to waste visiting time, but he said the more he thought about it, he really wanted me to be there to see him cross the finish line. I was already lost in thought… hold on, wait a minute… did he say 5K? I mean, 5K, isn’t that like hmmm miles? Like multiple miles? I surely heard him wrong. He was talking on and on all excited and I’m still trying to wrap my mind around the 5K part. “Exactly how far is that,” I asked him. He blurts out 3.1 miles and continues on. OMGosh! My son that didn’t/wouldn’t run a hundred yard dash was going to run 3.1 miles? Yea, I had to see this!

Giving Thanks

Thursday, November 26th

Colt called today around 2 p.m. He was crying.

I talked to him for a while alone. He just really wished he was home today. He wants to see his family. I think a big part of it is that he wants us to see him too. He is so excited about how much weight he has lost and he knows he looks so much better! I believe he really wants us to see it too.   He regretted that he missed his niece’s birthday and that he is going to miss his nephew’s first birthday next month. He just really cried about everything and I let him get it out. I listened and comforted. That’s all I could do. Once he seemed to get control again, I told him again how proud I was of him. I reminded him of how I thought he was such a mature young man to be able to handle this situation and make the best of it. Finally, he was ready to talk to the family.

Well, I put him on the speaker phone and all the family took turns with him. He said they had a great Thanksgiving dinner there and they had just come in from a soccer game in which his team had won. He sounded a thousand times better!

COLT:

Its Thanksgiving Day! I woke up at 8:00…me, Doug and Andrew got to sleep in today! Anyway, we had a wonderful day. We made t-shirts before lunch, and it was very fun. We had brand new white t-shirts and we used dye to color our shirts. After the shirts we had Thanksgiving lunch! We ate a lot of turkey, and we had gravy, cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potatoes and chocolate milk. It was like I was at home! After lunch we had a Thanksgiving soccer game, my team won 9-1! I scored 7 times, changed to the other team and scored once.

When the game was over I had a 30 minute phone call home. Most of my family was there and I got to talk to all of my brothers, my grandma and my niece and nephew (well hear them learn to talk). It made me feel so good inside! After my phone call we had dinner and a movie. We watched Hitch (very funny). We had one hour left before bedtime, so a couple of us played poker with poker chips…of course I lost first. Ha. Well I had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day in the end!

Can't do a Chin Up to Rock Climbing

Wednesday, November 25th

The day before Thanksgiving and we couldn’t wait to hear from Colt. He sounded great today! He was excited because he had lost another 5 pounds! That’s almost 30 pounds now; and he says he feels better than he has felt in years. His back is feeling great, his stamina is increasing daily. He said he plays soccer and basketball everyday and is he is having the time of his life! He says he is hiking a lot, rock climbing! Rock climbing!

My boy that couldn’t do a chin up before he left is rock climbing!

He was excited today also because he gets to call home tomorrow and speak to most of the family on Thanksgiving. He is still a bit homesick, especially because of the holidays, but he seems to be doing great.

Homesick

Wednesday, November 18th
Colt seemed a little sad today. He had only lost two pounds for the last week so he was a bit disappointed but he did point out the fact that it was a loss instead of a gain. That’s good that he can see it positively. Really, 21 pounds over three weeks is great! And he says he is never hungry and he loves the food. That is encouraging! Now if I can just learn to do that for him at home. He also says his strength and stamina are increasing each day. That is great news for his back!

I think the fact that he is not coming home for Thanksgiving is making him a bit gloomy though. I reminded him again that I would be there the weekend afterwards and that we would be talking to him again on Thanksgiving Day. I am really sad about it too, but I need to keep his spirits up. This is the best for him.

New Experiences

Sunday, November 15, 2009

COLT:

Today a lot of people went hiking up a mountain called Looking Glass Mountain and it was really fun, but it was really exhausting! It took us about three and a half hours to go up and back down the mountain! When we got up to the top the view was really exciting. I got one picture with my friend Maya, but I was too nervous to take a lot of pictures because I didn’t want to fall! Ha!
